Now, the main question that arises is, how does a folding bike perform? Is it worth the investment? Read our guide to find it out.

Or, if you’re in a hurry, click on the links in the table below to check the best folding mountain bikes on the market.

Folding bikes are a comfortable solution for those living in a small apartment and for commuters. But many cycling enthusiasts are concerned about their performance.

Yet, most folding bikes on the market are engineered to deliver a grade of satisfaction comparable to the regular bikes.

Read this quick guide to learn more about these machines, then check out the specs and features of the best folding mountain bikes on the market.

Regular Vs. Folding Mountain Bike

There is a huge difference between a regular and a folding mountain bike from the first glance. The former is a traditional machine built for performance. The latter is a tinier vehicle built for practicality. But this doesn’t mean you can’t have fun on a folding bike.

Moreover, both bikes come with their own sets of advantages and flaws. Here’s how they compare.

Regular Mountain Bikes

Regular mountain bikes are designed to improve the riding experience on off-road trails but are often used for multiple purposes, including commuting. Here are their main advantages.

  • Cost: regular mountain bikes tend to have better prices than their folding counterparts. This is explained by the simpler manufacturing process.
  • Ride: regular bikes are typically faster than the folding bikes. It is also easier to find a bike that fits your body frame.
  • Comfort: regular bikes are way more comfortable than folding bikes.

On a downside, regular mountain bikes are large and heavy, near impossible to fit in a bus or subway, and difficult to store if you live in a small apartment or condo.

Folding Mountain Bikes

Folding mountain bikes don’t enjoy a great reputation, mainly due to the weight and complexity of the first models. But these bikes have evolved in the past decades and now they are renowned for their versatility.

  • Practicality: folding bikes are popular among those who live in the cities because they are practical. Folding to compact dimensions, these bikes are easy to store in your home or office and are easy to transport by bus or subway.
  • Weight: folding mountain bikes are lightweight, a nice feature if you have to carry the bike for a long time.
  • Value: folding bikes cost more than their regular counterparts, but maintain their value for longer. If you want to resell the bike, you’ll most likely get a better price for it.

The main disadvantage of the folding mountain bikes is the comfort. Most bikes come in standard dimensions and might not fit all body types.

How To Choose A Folding Mountain Bike

Folding Mechanism

The first and foremost important thing to consider when choosing a folding mountain bike is the folding mechanism. There are three main types to consider. The mid-horizontal fold is the most popular but many cyclists believe it puts stress on the frame.

The triangle hinge vertical fold variety eliminates the problem of frame stress and these bikes usually come with built-in suspensions.

Lastly, there are the swivel fold bikes which are easy to fold and require minimal disassembly. Apart from these types, you can also consider the break-away folding bikes and the compacter models that feature two different folds.

Weight

Buying a folding mountain bikes is often dictated by the need for riding a practical machine. And weight can make or break the deal.

A foldable bike has to be easy to lift and carry; our suggestion is to choose the most lightweight model you can afford.

Wheel Size

Folding bikes typically have small wheels, but the manufacturer tends to equip the newest models with larger wheels. Small wheels tend to be faster but less comfortable; since comfort is a more important characteristic, we suggest choosing a model that has large wheels.

Some folding mountain bikes even have regular size wheels which make the ride comfortable but the machine harder to carry around.

Suspensions

Another thing to consider is suspensions. Not all folding bikes have suspensions and this may not be an issue if you love hardtail machines anyway. But if you enjoy cushioned rides and the comfort of suspensions when hitting bumpy trails, you might have to invest in a specialty model.

There are great folding mountain bikes with suspensions to consider, but usually, they cost more.

Price

Lastly, you’ll also have to consider the price. There are plenty of options for all budgets and expectations. The low-end bikes will only cost you a few hundred bucks but more often than not, you’ll have to compromise on weight and folding mechanism.

High-end models feature the newest technologies; they are easy to fold and unfold, lightweight, and comfortable.

But in this case, you’re looking at prices that tend to go around or over a thousand bucks.

Best Single Speed Mountain Bike

Best Single Speed Mountain Bike
Best Single Speed Mountain Bike

Most novice cyclists believe that a single speed mountain bike is outdated. They tend to invest their money in modern, multi-speed vehicles without having a second thought on why single speed bikes are still on the market.

Well, if you want to find out why single speed may be better than multi-speed, read on.

If you’re in a hurry but still want to check out specs and features of the best single speed bikes, click on the links in the table below.

Single speed mountain bikes are a hot topic. You either love them or hate them. Most cyclists hate them. Indeed, a single speed mountain bike can be a terrible machine if you’re not a super-navigated rider.

But regardless of your level of fitness and experience, a single speed bike may be the right choice for you.

Wondering why to swim against the tide? Here are a few reasons why you should invest in a single speed mountain bike.

Why Invest In A Single Speed Mountain Bike

Despite the world having evolved and despite the market being full of multi-speed mountain bikes, a wealth of cyclists still prefer single speed machines. Then, there is a whole wealth of cyclists who claim that anyone who rides a single speed still lives in the nineteenth century.

So, why should you own and ride such a bike?

Experience

The first and foremost important reason is, undoubtedly, the experience. Riding a single speed mountain bike is challenging and fun at the same time. There are no gears to shift, which means more peace of mind. But there is also no optimization of your ride.

Whether you’re going uphill or downhill, you’ll have to struggle and make the most out of what you have.

In general terms, this means boosting your strength and fitness level, along with an improvement of your skills.

Yes, riding a single speed vehicle is hard and stressful but it can help you get better. And with a host of riders riding in the wrong gear anyway, a single speed might be better until you learn all the basics of biking.

Costs

A single speed mountain bike is low-cost, in all senses. Starting with its price, a single speed is way cheaper than a multi-speed bike of the same level. That’s because engineering a single-speed bike is simpler. This machine has fewer parts, which means fewer production costs.

In the same way, you’ll spend less to maintain your bike. There are fewer parts to break, thus fewer parts you’ll have to replace.

Maintenance

If you’re a student and have a low overall budget, investing in a bike that requires a low maintenance can save you lots of bucks.

Maintenance on a single speed mountain bike usually means inflating the tires and lubricating the chain. Periodic maintenance includes a checkup of the brake system and brake pads, of the pedal and handlebars, maybe a replacement of the saddle.

But all these cost less than the usual maintenance of a multi-speed bike.

To cut costs, even more, you’ll probably be able to do most of the required maintenance by yourself.

How To Choose A Single Speed Mountain Bike

By now, you may have decided whether to give single speed bikes a chance or not. If you’re still reading, you’re perhaps wondering how to choose one.

First, don’t make the mistake to believe all single speed bikes are the same – they aren’t. There are different types of machines, various sizes, and a bunch of other things to consider.

Type

Just like multi-speed bikes, single speed comes as standard, BMX, or fat tire. Choosing the right one depends on your riding style. Which multi-speed bike do you prefer? If it’s a BMX, get a BMX. If it’s a standard, get a standard, and so on.

Preference apart, you should also consider where you ride the bike. If it’s mostly in parks and rarely on trails, a standard bike may perform better on the road back home. A specialty single speed mountain bike – yes, they do exist  - may be more suitable if you mostly ride on trails.

Also, choose the tires according to the type of terrain you’re riding on.

Size

The size of the bike is an important thing to consider. We’ve explained already how to choose the right size, and the same guidelines apply to the single speed mountain bike too.

Frame

Single speed mountain bikes are hard to ride, that’s why choosing a lightweight frame is essential. Pushing the vehicle uphill or controlling it on muddy trails may easily turn into living hell if the bike is heavy. Most entry-level bikes are made of steel, but we truly recommend aluminum.

Carbon fiber is the lighter but also the costlier option – and it’s certainly not worth the investment unless you’re a true fan of single-speed.

Best Entry-Level Road Bike Tires For Road Racing

Best Entry-Level Road Bike Tires For Road Racing
Best Entry-Level Road Bike Tires For Road Racing

Road racing is a complex sport in which the road bike tires determine the performance. Certainly, the performance is driven by multiple factors, but the tire’s road grip, width, and structure can improve it.

If you’re a beginner wondering how to choose the right road bike tires, read on. Or, if you’re in a hurry, click on the links in the table below to check some of the best entry-level road bike tires on the market.

Most road bike owners have little interest in choosing the right tires and rims for their bikes. As long as you’re using the bike only to move from one place to another or for recreational purposes, any tire can do. But if you’re aiming to performance, the rolling resistance, aerodynamics, pattern, and type of the tire matters.

Road bike tires come in several types and styles. They have different patterns that ultimately determine their rolling resistance. The width determines both the comfort and the aerodynamics. Then, there are tubular and tubeless tires.

In such a maze of products, how to choose the best one? This guide aims to help you determine which type of tires you need based on your cycling goals. We’ve also selected some of the best entry-level road bike tires for road racing. Check them out below.

Road Bike Tires - Main Types

Hook Bead Clinchers

These tires are the most common and most affordable for road biking. Standard hook bead clinchers come in different sizes and are manufactured for different types of bikes, including road, mountain, commuter’s, and touring bikes.

Most of the times, they are lightweight and can be used on most types of rims. However, they have a higher rolling resistance and are prone to getting punctured easily.

Tubeless Hook Bead Clinchers

In terms of looks, these tires are pretty much like the hook bead clinchers above. The main difference is the resistance of the bead; on this type of tires, the beads are stronger and heavier. They are created to provide an airtight seal when used on specific tubeless rims.

Their main advantage is the greater quality of the ride and improved efficiency. They have a lower rolling resistance, helping riders improve their performance.

These tires also have a higher resistance to punctures but they are hard to install and more difficult to repair. In fact, it’s very unlikely to fix them with a puncture repair kit and more often than not, you’ll have to completely change them.

Tubular Road Bike Tires

Among the most performing tires for a road bike, there is the tubular. These tires are primarily used for road racing and the main characteristic is the tube that’s integrated into the tire and stitched to the casing.

Very hard to install, these tires are glued to specific tubular rims. This installation method increases the tire’s resistance to punctures, lowers the rolling resistance and boosts performance. If you’re aiming to become a road racing pro, tubular tires are your best bet.

Road Bike Tires Anatomy

Road bike tires consist of a casing and a thread; hook-bead clinches tires also contain beads. The casing, or the inner part of the tire, is made of a tough, resistant, yet flexible material and has the purpose to restrain stretching and maintain the shape of the tire while riding.

Modern casings are made of several layers of different materials that include Kevlar, cotton, nylon, and polyamide. Not all tires have all these layers but as a general rule, the more layers a tire has the tougher and puncture resistant it will be.

The thickness of the tires is expressed in TPI; the lower the number the thicker the casing. Most road bike tires have a TPI of over 100, which means they contain very fine threads that ensure the suppleness and low rolling resistance of the tire.

The thread is the outer part of the tire and its main goal is to maximize aerodynamics. The thread is characterized by patterns, which vary from smooth to slick; most road bike tires have smooth threads which are made of a compound containing rubber or butyl and additives such as Kevlar, silicone, or carbon black.

Present on the clinches tires, the beads are two steel or Kevlar cables folded inside the edges of the casing. Their purpose is to minimize the elasticity of the tire, keeping it in place on the rim. The beads can be made of flexible and foldable materials that ensure an easy storage and transport.

How To Choose Road Bike Tires

Type

The first thing to decide when choosing road bike tires is which model is the best for you. The three main types are described above but don’t just assume a tubular tire is your best bet. Depending on your level of performance, riding style and purpose, tubular may or may not be the best.

For an entry-level athlete, tubeless tires could be the most appropriate. These tires are resistant to punctures but affordable, easier to replace, and easier to repair.

Tubular tires are also less comfortable. Their purpose is that of reducing rolling resistance and this often means less tire width and less grip. If you’re mainly riding for leisure or commuting, you’re not going to enjoy comfortable rides with tubular tires.

If your budget is low, traditional clinchers could be the best choice for you.

Size

Another thing to consider is the size of the tires that must fit on the size of the rims. Most road bikes need 700mm tires, but some smaller size bikes or women’s road bikes have smaller wheels. Check the specs of your vehicle and make sure the tires fit perfectly on the rims.

Width

Road bike tires have variable widths, usually between 23 and 32mm. The wider the tire the more comfortable the ride, but wide tires increase rolling resistance. In other words, try to invest in narrower tires if you want to improve your riding performance.

Valve

The two choices are Schrader and Presta. Schrader valves are similar to the car tire valves and are usually present on the entry-level tires. Presta valves boast an increased performance and are usually used on the high-end bikes.

The size of the hole on the rim will indicate which type of valve you need. As a general rule, don’t use a Presta valve on a rim designed for Schrader because you may damage both the valve and the rim. Shrader valves don’t fit in Presta holes at all, as they are larger.

Pattern

Choose a tire pattern that fits your riding style. For road racing purposes, choose a smooth tire with minimal patterns which improve rolling resistance. A patterned tire has a better grip on the road and they are ideal for those commuting by bike.

Tires with heavy patterns are usually recommended to those who love cycling off-road every now and then, as they improve balance and stability on slippery terrains.

Best Tire Repair Kit To Fix Your Bike’s Flat Tire

Best Tire Repair Kit To Fix Your Bike's Flat Tire
Best Tire Repair Kit To Fix Your Bike's Flat Tire

Whether you’re cycling for leisure or performance, flat tires happen. And when this happens, a tire repair kit is a handy item to have. There are many kits available on the market or you can build one yourself.

If you don’t have the patience to put together a kit nor the time to read this guide, click on the links in the table below to check out five of the best tire repair kits on the market.

A tire repair kit is an essential thing to have in your backpack each time you go riding. If you’re a novice, you can rely on the kits available on the market. If you’re a more experienced rider, you might build your own tire repair kit.

Doing so is simple. You’ll just have to buy a case and all the necessary tools and consumables. Here’s how to do it.

How To Make A Bike Tire Repair Kit Yourself

Making a tire repair kit yourself is easy, you’ll just have to invest in a series of tools and materials. Making a kit yourself gives you the advantage of selecting the products you like best. For instance, if you have a brand preference for certain tools, you can include them in the kit. That’s not possible with a ready-to-use kit found on the market. Yet, a ready-to-use kit saves you the hassle of looking and shopping different items.

That said, here’s a list of what you need to include in your kit.

  • Tire levers
  • Spare tube
  • Multi-tool
  • check
    Patch kit
  • check
    Hand pump
  • check
    White marker

Pack all items in a nice carrying case and your custom-made bike repair kit is ready. And now that you know what a bike repair kit contains, here’s how to fix a flat tire.

How To Fix A Flat Tire

tire repair kit

You’ll need your tire repair kit, either a bespoke one made by you or a ready-to-use kit available on the market.

Step 1 – Remove The Wheel

Once you’ve pulled on a safe place on the side of the road, use the multi-tool in your kit to remove the wheel. If it’s the back wheel, make sure to first shift the chain on the smallest sprocket, then loosen the quick release to remove the wheel. If the wheel is fixed with bolts, use the wrench in your multi-tool to remove it.

Step 2 – Remove The Inner Tube

At this stage, use the tire levers to gently lift the tire out of the rim, paying attention to not damage the valve. The easiest way to do this is by first deflating the whole tire, pushing the air out with your hands. Once deflated, lift the tire with one lever then insert another lever at a few inches apart from the first one.

Work your way with the first lever pushing the tire out of the rim until you reach the second lever, then repeat until you’ve removed the whole tire. Then, remove the inner tube from the tire.

Step 3 – Identify The Puncture

Now it’s time to play detective and identify the puncture. The easiest way to do this is by inflating the tube half way and submerge it in water. The bubbles will show you exactly where the leak is. If there is no water source near you, just inflate the inner tube all the way then keep it close to you to feel where the leak happens.

If the puncture is small, this could take a while; alternatively, you can just replace the punctured tube with a spare one and identify the leak later on.

Step 4 – Repair The Puncture

If you had the patience to identify the puncture, circle it with a white marker then proceed to fix it. Deflate the tube again and use the patch kit following the manufacturer’s instructions to fix the tube. Wait for the indicated time then place the inner tube back into the tire.

Step 5 – Mount The Tire And Wheel

Place the tire back on the rim using the levers and the multi-tool. Once the tire is in its place, mount the wheel back on the bike. Check if everything is secured in place; once you’re sure the bike is safe to ride, hop back in the saddle and continue your journey.

Best Schwinn Road Bike For Beginners

If you’ve just got interested in road cycling, a Schwinn road bike could be excellent for you as a beginner. Renowned for its quality and affordable prices, Schwinn is one of the most famous cycling gear and accessories manufacturer in the US.

But Schwinn road bikes come in a range of styles and sizes. How to choose the right one for you? What should you be looking for in a road bike anyway?

Whether this is your first road bike ever or just looking for a new vehicle, this guide is for you. And if you’re really in a hurry, just click on the links in the table below to check out our top picks.

Why Invest In A Schwinn Road Bike

A leader of the US bike industry in the twentieth century, Schwinn is now owned by Dorel Industries and has its headquarters in Vancouver. But despite being sold by the original owners in 2001, the brand maintained the quality of the products.

The main change Schwinn underwent under the new ownership was the diversification of its product range. Today, Schwinn is still synonymous with high-end performance bikes but also proposes a range of low-cost alternatives for beginners or budget-savvy athletes.

Certainly, the low-cost alternatives don’t have the same specs and characteristics of a high-end Schwinn bike. Yet, the impress with their quality and in this range, it’s easy to find a Schwinn road bike for beginners.

Another reason to choose Schwinn is the variety of the offer. If you’re not sure whether road biking is your thing or not, the manufacturer offers a wide range of hybrid bikes. Then, road bikes come in various sizes and styles, suitable for men and women.

Almost all men’s models come equipped with standard 700c wheels, which is great to know. Finding replacement parts is easy, and another thing to note is the collaboration between Schwinn and Shimano as far as the drivetrain is concerned.

Yes, Shimano might not be the highest quality if you aim for performance. But if you’re just taking your first steps into this sport, the manufacturers deliver a decent quality and affordable vehicles ideal to give you a glimpse of what to expect.

How To Choose A Schwinn Road Bike

When choosing a Schwinn road bike, like any other road bike, as a matter of fact, there are a few things to consider.

Frame

Like for any other bike, the frame is the most important thing to consider. Not only the material is important, you also have to decide the shape.

Speaking of shape, there are two types of road bikes, with a race geometry or with a flat bar. The race geometry is preferred by those who are cycling for performance but are harder to handle by a beginner. However, if you want to get used to such a bike from the start, Schwinn proposes a range of entry-level road bikes with race geometry.

Flat bar bikes are usually equipped with entry or mid-level components and are cheaper. They allow the cyclist to maintain a more upright position and are suitable for those who want to use the bike for more than one purpose. For example, to commute and for recreational cycling.

The frame’s material is also important. Most low and middle-end road bikes are made of steel or aluminum alloy, but the most performing models come in carbon fiber. Owning a lightweight vehicle is important when racing but not only.

Even if you use the bike for leisure only, it’s still easier to ride on a more lightweight bike.

Wheels

Road bikes usually come with 700c wheels, but non-standard models may be equipped with different parts. When choosing the bike, make sure the wheels have the right size for you, otherwise, it can result uncomfortable and even dangerous to ride.

What the wheels are made of also matters. Aluminum alloy is the most common material, but high-end road bikes come with carbon fiber wheels.

Pedals

Entry and mid-level road bikes come with pedals of all types, to allow cyclists to choose the type of pedals that work with their favorite cycling shoes. But high-end bikes come may come with no pedals at all.

This is the standard in the industry because athletes have clear preferences about the pedals they like. By buying a bike with no pedals, those practicing performance road cycling can simply equip the bike with their favorite model of pedals, and this reduces costs and waste.

In the case of pedals, it’s also important to choose the right material to avoid adding extra weight to the vehicle.

Best Cycling Shorts For Road Riding

If you’re new to road cycling, wearing cycling shorts might not even cross your mind. But this sports require you to wear specific clothing–that is if you aim for performance. But why should you wear them? Do they make a difference? Read our guide to find your answers.

Are you in a hurry? Click the links below to check out specs and characteristics of the best cycling shorts for road riding.

When observing professional cyclists at work (aka on tours), it’s easy to notice they all wear super-tight Lycra or Spandex shorts and matching jerseys. This specific clothing, as weird as it might seem, is designed for performance and there is a reason all pros wear similar shorts.

Yet, newbies are often reluctant to dressing in such a hasty manner. Add that these shorts should be worn without underwear, and the most bashful enthusiasts might already run away.

Now, cycling shorts will not turn you into a Tour de France pro on their own. But they will improve your cycling experience, helping in keeping you motivated. Still wondering why you need a pair? Check these reasons out.

5 Reasons To Invest In Cycling Shorts

1. Comfort

Plain and simple, you should wear cycling shorts because they are comfortable. Padded in just the right places and tight enough to provide a super-comfy fit, cycling shorts will make you feel better in the saddle. Unlike denim or other sports garments, road cycling shorts don’t have stitches in the crotch area and are designed to comfort your privates on long-haul rides.

But there are loose cycling shorts too, I hear you screaming. That’s true, but check out the other reasons to understand why loose shorts aren’t a good choice.

2. Protection

Lycra and Spandex are the choice materials for road cycling shorts for a reason. They are highly breathable. This allows a better management of the sweat and controls the growth of bacteria, minimizing rashes.

Strategic padding keeps your privates protected while the lack of stitching prevents rubbing and skin damage.

3. Performance

Tight-fitting materials reduce air resistance, improving your motion range. An improved motion and less resistance translate into less fatigue to reach your objective. This keeps you motivated, ultimately improving your performance.

4. Heat Management

Breathability doesn’t only dries sweat and minimize rashes, it only helps you manage heat better. And when you’re cycling under the summer sun with no shade at the horizon, that’s an important thing.

A better heat management has a positive impact on your performance because the sensation of comfort will keep you going for longer.

5. Style

Ultimately, there is style. And it matters. Cycling is a social sport and you don’t want to be the only one in the gang looking differently. Road cycling shorts and all proper road cycling gear will make you feel part of a group.

It’s odd how clothing can help someone integrate with other athletes. When other cyclists will see you dressed that way, they’ll just know you’re one of them.

Do Cycling Shorts Really Improve Performance?

Cycling shorts on their own are unable to improve your performance. It’s the associated benefits that boost your mood and keep you motivated to indirectly improve performance. How? Just imagine, how far would you cycle in a pair of uncomfortable pants? Probably not too far. But how far are you willing to push your limits if there is nothing to jeopardize comfort?

Like in any sport, comfort matters. Road cycling is a hard sport. It’s painful enough on its own. Don’t make things even harder by wearing inappropriate garments.

How To Choose The Best Cycling Shorts

If you’re now convinced that cycling shorts are your best bet, you’d better find out how to choose the right pair for you.

Fit

We’ve already explained why tight is better than baggy. But you should also check how the shorts fit you. Choose the right size even if it might look tighter than what you’re used to right now. Another important thing is to choose gender-specific garments. Men and women have different body types and shorts designed for the opposite gender may not provide the desired comfort.

Padding

Padding is usually made of chamois, a synthetic material that provides sufficient cushioning. Designed to protect your most intimate parts, padding is also designed specifically for men and women. After all, we’re pretty different down there. And that’s another important reason you should choose gender-specific shorts.

The thickness of the padding is another thing to consider. Road cycling shorts usually have thick paddings to protect athletes during the long hours in the saddle. But if you want to use the same shorts for various sports, let’s say swimming and running, a model with thinner padding is recommended.

Style

Road cycling shorts come in two styles, with waistband or bib. The latter is more comfortable for performance cycling, as it’s more comfortable to wear for a long time while sitting in a bent position. Yet, we can’t say one model is better than another and it’s all a matter of preference.

Fabric

While cotton might be a good material for your office shirts, it’s not for your sports shorts. Cycling shorts are usually made of spandex or Lycra, but there are other synthetic materials to consider. Just pay attention to choose a breathable material that doesn’t retain moisture.

Another thing to consider is the climate in your area. If it’s mostly cold weather, choose neoprene or another material that feels comfy at low temperatures.

Color

Classy black isn’t the only way to go. There is a rainbow of colors to choose from. Patterns, brand names, bright colors, you name it! Everything’s accepted when it comes to this, so let your personality shine.

Best Sports Water Bottle To Use While Cycling

Best Sports Water Bottle To Use While Cycling
Best Sports Water Bottle To Use While Cycling

Keeping hydrated while cycling is important. And a sports water bottle can keep your beverage fresh throughout the day. But why invest in such a bottle? Isn’t a normal bottle just as good?

In short, no. A normal bottle can’t compete with a sports bottle, because the latter has been developed to address specific needs. Find out why you need it, or click on the links below to check out our top picks.

Whether you’re fond of road cycling, mountain biking, or you simply commute by bike, having water at hand at all times is essential. To do this, there are a few options you could consider. But if a hydration pack is too much for you, then you should find the perfect sports water bottle.

Wondering why a normal bottle isn’t just as good? Keep reading!

Why Use A Sports Water Bottle

There are a few reasons you should use a sports water bottle. The first and foremost important is because this accessory is manufactured specifically for sports. Of course, manufacturers put fancy names on their products, calling them cycling water bottles, running water bottles, fitness water bottles, and so on. But in the end, they are all similar and do the same thing. Namely, they provide easy access to water.

And that’s why a traditional water bottle bought from the store is not a good option when riding at 25mph. In fact, normal bottles usually come with screw caps that more often than not, will require you to stop and drink.

On the contrary, sports water bottles usually have beaks or nozzles that offer easy access to the vital liquid.

Then, if you want, you can even use a sports water bottle because it’s fancy. A great alternative would be a hydration pack, although this option is mostly preferred by mountain riders.

So, if you’ve decided to go for the sports water bottle, also consider equipping your bike with a high-quality water bottle holder, positioned on the frame and within easy reach. There are dozens of models on the market, and finding the right one for you shouldn’t be too hard.

How To Choose A Sports Water Bottle

Capacity

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a sports water bottle is its capacity. These bottles come in all sizes, from 12oz to 32oz, and you should decide which is the best based on your cycling style.

If you just use the bike for light recreational purposes, a 12oz bottle might be enough. If you love taking long rides or are training for a triathlon, for example, a bottle of at least 24oz is more appropriate.

Material

Sports water bottles are usually made of soft plastic or silicone, and that’s an important characteristic because it allows you to squeeze the bottle when drinking. Most bottles available on today’s market are made of BPA-free plastic or Tritan copolyester, two squeezable materials suitable to use during a heavy workout.

Cap

For cycling, a bottle with a self-sealing valve is the most appropriate choice. This will allow you to access the water with just one hand, by simply pulling the valve with your mouth while squeezing the bottle. But not all manufacturers make bottles with valves.

Some sports water bottles have half-turn caps or even lids that can easily be opened with just one hand.

You can obviously choose the closure you like best, but for the sake of performance, we recommend investing in a bottle that doesn’t require you to stop the bike to take a sip.

Shape

We’ve talked about capacity, but the shape of the bottle is also important. Most water bottle cages or holders accommodate slim bottles, but it’s hard to find one that fits a chunkier container. If you really like a sports water bottle that is chunky, try and see if it fits in your holder.

Insulation

The last thing to check is whether the bottle is insulated or not. An insulated flask will keep your water fresh for longer, and that’s a big plus. But because insulated bottles are usually more expensive than those without insulation, we wouldn’t advise investing in one unless you really need it.

Again, consider your cycling goals or style. For just a quick commute to work, an insulated bottle might be unnecessary. But if you’re planning to stay in the saddle all day and push your limits, an insulated bottle will keep your beverage fresh for longer.
